Advanced knee osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage inside the knee joint gradually wears away. This can cause persistent pain, stiffness, swelling and difficulty performing everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs and standing for extended periods.

When medications, physiotherapy and other conservative treatments no longer provide adequate relief, total knee replacement may be recommended.
